Introduction

This blog is the collaborative effort of four human and physical geography students, from Reading University.  From 16th – 23rd June 2009, we will be using this blog as a means by which to record and reflect upon our experiences and findings whilst completing fieldwork in the region of Sfakia, Crete.

Whilst based in Chora Sfakion, the capital of Sfakia, time will be spent exploring the local area, as is shown below in the itinerary for our time in Sfakia.

Itinerary

June 17th – Physical Geography fieldwork to be completed in Ilingas Gorge

June18th – Travelling by ferry to Loutro returning on foot along the Chora Sfakion coast

Focus of study

The human geography element of the fieldwork is to investigate the impact of human activity, in particular tourism in the region. Within this research consideration will be given to the management of tourism, the potential of sustainable tourism as a means for future development and how tourism varies in different parts of the region.

The physical geography research seeks to investigate the impact of natural processes upon the landscape, with a particular focus being placed on the Ilingas Gorge Flood. The flood occurred on December 5th 2000. Data will be collated to establish the magnitude of the peak flow discharge in the gorge and to study the sequence of flooding in the gorge. Information regarding the influence of slope and coastal processes upon the landscape will also be gathered to assist in this investigation.
